Harnessing the power of Habits
As part of my series of articles and videos on The Slight Edge book, written by Jeff Olson, today I am going to discuss the power of creating habits from Chapter eight. I plan to discuss how the power of forming habits will be a powerful component to building a successful business. But of you are not careful how it can also destroy your business.
"Nothing is stronger than a habit" Ovid
The above quote is true. Habits are what you do everyday without thinking. Think about what you do everyday that is a habit, such as cleaning your teeth, making your bed (ok not everyone may have this habit), having a coffee when you first wake up, taking a shower every morning. This list goes on and on. Can you remember making these habits? No, because once you have made the habit you soon forget the pain you went through to make that habit. And you no longer experience pain when you do these activities because they are now simply part of who you are.
A lot of the habits I mentioned above are positive hygiene habits that we have formed when we were young children. They are powerful activities that we do every day to ensure we start the day in the best way possible to remain healthy and are well prepared for the day ahead. We do these activities without thinking and do not try to prioritise them at all, we simply do them.
If you ever have to prioritise something then you have the option of not doing it. When this occurs you are potentially in trouble. Let's use the example of doing your teeth. What would happen if you decided one day not to do your teeth. Not much really, you may have slight bad breath that day but probably no one would notice and there would not really be any damage to your teeth. But since you were able to de-prioritise this activity one day you will probably have a tendency to do that on another occasion, and more times in the future. Eventually your teeth would start decaying and your bad breath would put people off talking to you, or even be around you. One small decision could have longer term ramifications!
Let's put this into a business context. If you were able to form a habit of doing something on your business every day do you think this would have a positive effect on your business? Yes it would. But what if you decided not do something on your business one day. One day this would be fine, but now that you are comfortable about doing nothing on one day you will soon become comfortable about not doing something on two or three days in a row. Then all of a sudden you have not done anything on your business for a week, or more. How successful do you think your business will be once this starts to happen? Habits can have positive and negative impacts on your business. When I took up one of CarbonCopyPro's turnkey business opportunities I knew I had to develop positive habits that would make my business successful in the long run. I had to be aware of any negative habits that I currently had which could take me away from my ultimate goal. Can you think of any negative habits you currently have that may be restricting your success?
Today I have discussed the power of creating habits from Chapter eight of the Slight Edge. I highlighted how the power of forming habits will be a powerful component to building a successful business, but if you are not careful it can also destroy your business.
